Iury Lech is a multidisciplinary artist that during the late 1970’s and 80’s rose as a pioneer within a moment focussed on electronically generated audio and visual media. Drawing on the ground gained by Minimalist pioneers like Steve Reich, Terry Riley or Jon Hassell - built from repetitive rhythm and sheets of rippling resonance, drone, and ambience- Lech’s two first works of that period, ‘Otra Rumorosa Superficie’ and the seminal album "Música para el fin de los cantos", one of the most sought after reissues of recent years along with the remix album "Reinterpretaciones", are a beautiful listening experience spanning through dark ambient and cinematic minimalism of real depth.

Iury Lech - ONTONANOLOGY
Of Ukrainian origin, now living in Madrid, Iury Lech already has a long career behind him, with a first album, "Otra Rumorosa Superficie", released in 1989 by Hyades, reissued in 2018 by Utopia Records. ONTONANOLOGY, released in March 2022, was released in early 2023 in vinyl form in a limited edition of one hundred copies. A pioneer of the electronic and audiovisual scene in Spain, Iury Lech is an interdisciplinary artist influenced by minimalist composers or those around him, such as Steve Reich, Terry Riley or Jon Hassell. If "Otra Rumorosa Superficie" seems to me bland and far from minimalist, "Música para el final de los cantos", released in 1990, is a little better, very Reichian in its first title, the sequel being uneven, stuck by marshmallow-like synthetic instrumentation (I assumes the neologism). ONTONANOLOGY no longer has much to do with this sweetish electronic music, and that's good!!!
ONTONANOLOGY? A philosophical music, in search of Being? Without a doubt. In any case, nothing to do with garden gnomes, except for the microscopic scale of the electronic particles combined in this music. What counts is that the music of Iury Lech has gained nerve, eyeing the side of Autechre, minimal techno, glitch. From the first title, "Stellium", we understand, we hear that Iury got rid of synthetic mattresses to fall asleep very quickly. Leaping techno, minimal, very dry, with rumbling drones, it's a pleasure! "Wúxiàn" spins on slamming loops, hypnotic and misty at will, with beautiful sharp tears. "Dilapidated Ellipsis" is an assembly of dry drones and glitches that soars in an abstract and dark, stormy lyricism. No more shoddy melancholy, dubious affects... "Tranxenobots" offers a mind-blowing journey in the middle of science fiction: pointillist techno, reduced to superimposed micro-percussive suites, crossing the sound space in all directions, it's a beauty to the bone!
I hear the fifth track, "Ontonanology (and Banality)", as an ironic kill in the old fashioned way: the fluffy slicks are literally riddled with crackles, a bed of tight little bites. The least good title in any case, a little soft pivot of the album! Fortunately, "Precambric Strain" leaves very strong, repetitive machine gun with brief flashes, with black swirls, an implacable force, for an electronically breathtaking final dive! This second part is almost industrial with "Oneiric Atmos", clash of stars in infinity. Always hypnotic, it turns abyssal, disturbing. And "Devastated Okeans" submerges us under an enormous flux, populated by dark rays. A strange fantastic ride unfolds in an apocalyptic atmosphere. Absolutely excellent! "Licca Carpatiana" continues in the same very dark vein of minimal ambient techno, tight percussive tingling, drones and frictions, crumplings, a sort of suffocating electronic jungle, from which we will never leave again... if not for wild music scenarios, the astonishing last title, "Wild Music Scenarios", almost mocking in its grotesque, outrageous aspect.
An excellent record of dark techno-ambient electronic music.

"Spanish audio/video artist pioneer Iury Lech has been on the scene for over forty years. Continuing to expand on his electronic approach to
sound art, his latest album, Ontonanology is a beat driven, pulsing
piece of digital ambient. Focusing on the microscopic scale of the
music itself, Iury hopes to bring these microcollisions and fluctuations
to the forefront.
Ontonanology is composed of ten tracks of many sizes and scopes,
textures and rhythms, and percussion and drift. While one has ample
room to drift and assess what each song entails, Iury has sent along a
quick cheat sheet:
A cluster planets convergence.
Infinite wave forms.
Dissolution in the vast matter.
Reflecting dark substance.
Invisible metaphysics.
Anthropocenetics.
Inmaterial chaos.
Abyssal gravity.
Origins amalgam.
Euphonic spheres.
With the size and scope in front of you, one can get a bigger appreciation for what Lech is putting forth in Ontonanology. With some larger themes, his restraint of tone and structure is coupled very well with the sonic themes shown on some of the microscopic or invisible songs. Built upon subtlety (and the aforementioned restraint), Ontonanology is constructed just like the universe. No matter how big or how grand something is, it's all composed of the tiniest pieces of matter. Layered and open to dissection and constant revisitation, Ontonanology is set in such a way that the listener can decide what to focus on, when to do so, and how to enjoy each successive listen. Using patterns to set the stage and seeing the
pattern disintegrate, Lech speaks to the ephemeral nature of some events while also speaking to time distortion and interpretation: some events that seem to take an eternity for the one involved look to be very brief to an outside observer. Highs and lows, fasts and slows, Ontonanology spreads the scope over many areas, both in time, texture, and aggression.
Sometimes grandiose and cinematic, sometimes small, propulsive, and frantic, Ontonanology gives the listener quite the feast for sonic dissection. Multiple plays unlock many different aspects of the album,
and Lech never forces a perspective. As an audio/video artist, Lech's take on composition is different than that of a traditional sound artist. One can hope that one day Lech will release a visual accompaniment to this album."

"Iury Lech is a Ukrainian-American composer, filmmaker and writer who likes to combine his different activities. Whatever he does, he's always avant-garde, be it ambient, industrial percussion, drones, or space jazz. “Ontonanology” is dominated by warm electronics with a strong German touch, rhythmic and cinematic to the core. Deep bass, soft gliding sounds and some beats for invertebrate aliens as a nice background. With minimal communication, Iury Lech creates an alienating, sci-fi percussion environment, harrowing and very intense, but also dazzling. A thunderous, dark and heavy aural journey of great class, but with minimal air tightness."

"Two tracks from Spanish audiovisual artist Iury Lech, from his album Ontonanology, which is his most techno-oriented as far as I can see. A child of Ukrainian immigrants, his work first appeared in the late 1970s and early 1980s, combining video art with music that drew from ambient, world and classical minimalist influences, and later a solid base in industrial music. Those elements are here, but the sounds here evoke the deep of the oceans as well as the sub-molecular scale, with throbbing, pulsing music that could fit well on raster-media. I thought this album was going to be out now, but it seems like it's November, so you get one extra track preview. I really recommend this, it's enveloping and transporting stuff."
